Telia and Ericsson are claiming a new speed record for a Swedish 5G network. The firms say they achieved a download rate of 2.2Gbps using Telia’s live 5G network in central Stockholm using an iPhone 12. As part of a SEK1 billion (USD117 million) rollout programme, Telia is planning to cover 90% of Sweden’s territory and 99% of the population with 5G by 2025. It launched its first 5G services in parts of Stockholm in May 2020 using 700MHz spectrum and is now adding 3.5GHz frequencies which it won at auction earlier this year.
Staffan Akesson, network manager at Telia, commented: ‘Thanks to the 3.5GHz band we acquired in the 5G auction, we and our partner Ericsson can now test what Swedish-developed 5G technology really stands for. Reaching this speed live in our network is an absolutely fantastic result, not least because it was achieved with a completely normal mobile. In other words, anyone with a 5G subscription from Telia can do the same thing.’
