SLT-Mobitel committing USD126m per annum to improve 4G, FTTH connectivity

State-owned fixed and mobile operator Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT-Mobitel) claims it has invested more than LKR25 billion (USD126.3 million) per annum over the past few years on infrastructure development, with a specific focus on its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) rollout and 4G LTE mobile network expansion. With the Sri Lankan operator reporting a 30% surge in demand for data during each COVID-19 lockdown and a doubling in actual data usage, it notes that while 95% of the population is covered by its mobile signal, concerted efforts are underway to provide connectivity to more people in ‘challenged terrain’. Working closely with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), SLT-Mobitel is aiming to fast-track the establishment of new towers in unserved parts of remote/rural Sri Lanka.
