Airtel upgrades 10,000 sites in AP to 4G

30 Jun 2021

Indian full-service provider Bharti Airtel has upgraded 10,000 mobile sites in Andhra Pradesh to 4G and has deployed an additional 4MHz of spectrum in the 900MHz band across the circle. In a statement from the telco, Airtel explained that the upgrades would significantly bolster capacity and enable it to provide better coverage inside homes and buildings in urban areas. The deployment also allows the cellco to provide wider coverage along roads and railways, and will increase its footprint in villages. The development is the latest in a series of upgrades rolled out by Airtel in recent months, the provider having deployed additional spectrum in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Assam and North East in May this year.

In a separate development, meanwhile, Airtel has deployed solutions provided by US-based vendor Ciena to almost triple capacity on its fibre-optic networks to support 5G services.
