State-backed full-service provider Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) has signed contracts with Chinese vendor Huawei for the transformation of its IP Edge and Optical Transport Network (OTN) infrastructure. PTCL notes that the overhaul aims to address the ‘exponential’ growth in traffic. The works will include the modernisation of its existing inter-city and long-haul networks, which, combined with its OTN backbone, will increase PTCL’s long-haul capacity to ‘multiple Tbps’. The contracts also cover the deployment of a unified IP Edge network, spanning over 130 sites, for the provision of next generation IP services. Commenting on the agreements, PTCL Acting CEO Nadeem Khan was quoted as saying: ‘PTCL continues to transform its network with scalable architecture and futuristic technologies, to meet growing bandwidth demand from our subscribers, corporate and carrier customers. We are glad to partner with Huawei on this strategic initiative, that will go a long way in enabling the widespread availability of quality ICT Services across Pakistan.’
