Vodafone Spain has announced that it has deployed a pre-commercial 5G Standalone (SA) core network in Spain, in conjunction with vendor partner Ericsson. The core network will initially be accessible via Samsung smartphones, the press release adds. Ericsson’s Cloud Native 5G Core is totally independent of the existing 4G network and will allow new functionalities such as Network Slicing, as well as delivering reduced latency, improved network stability and better battery efficiency.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Vodafone’s 5G Non Standalone (NSA) network is currently available in 25 major cities across Spain, delivering coverage to more than 50% of the population in each location. The telco became Spain’s first 5G operator when its network went live back in June 2019.
Vodafone notes that it has also launched a separate 5G SA infrastructure pilot in the UK this week. The testing is focused on London, Manchester and Cardiff, with network upgrades already completed at 30 sites.
