Cloud-native platform specialist Robin.io — a key tech partner of Japan’s new fourth operator Rakuten Mobile – has reportedly raised USD38 million via a Series C funding round, led by Rakuten Capital, increasing its funding to date to USD86 million. According to TelecomTV, the vendor’s ‘networking-oriented Kubernetes platform is designed to run radio access network (RAN), core, edge and other cloud-native applications being deployed by network operators, and is being used by Rakuten Mobile for its Open RAN-based 5G network’.
Oskar Mielczarek de la Miel, managing partner at Rakuten Capital, noted: ‘Robin.io has proven to be an outstanding technology partner to Rakuten Mobile, which established the world’s first cloud-native 5G network running on the Robin Cloud Native Platform’.
Earlier, Rakuten Mobile marked the first anniversary of its full-scale commercial launch confirming that as of 8 April 2021 the total cumulative number of applications for the UN-LIMIT VI package had surpassed 3.9 million (incl. applications and pre-registrations for application), while the total number of Rakuten Mobile contracts, including MVNO contracts, had reached 4.5 million.
