Nokia has announced that it will deploy a 5G Standalone (SA) core for DISH on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) public cloud. While DISH has previously announced agreements with both companies, the vendor says that this development marks the world’s first deployment of 5G in the public cloud, supporting DISH’s cloud-native, Open RAN-based 5G network with improved scale, performance and security. Nokia says it is deploying the 5G SA core on AWS to enable the automation required to meet evolving customer needs; it should allow DISH to support new enterprise and consumer 5G use cases quickly, securely and across multiple cloud stacks at end customer premises.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, DISH has announced that Las Vegas will be the first live city in its nationwide 5G network deployment. DISH plans to deploy a 5G network covering 20% of the population by June 2022, rising to 70% by June 2023. Beta testing is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2021.
