Angola interested in Safaricom’s mobile money

Angola’s Minister of Economy and Planning, Sergio Santos, has invited Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom to invest in Angola, with particular interest in its ‘M-Pesa’ mobile payment solution, reports Agence Ecofin. In October 2020 Angolan mobile market leader Unitel launched mobile money services after being granted a Payment Services Provider licence by the National Bank of Angola (BNA), but the government is now considering opening up the sector to an experienced foreign operator to accelerate take-up of financial services. Angola has a low level of financial inclusion, with the BNA aiming to raise the percentage of the population with access to basic financial services from 30% (2019) to 50% by the end of 2022.
