Cellnex wins approval for tower takeover in Italy

17 Jun 2021

Italy’s Competition Authority (Autorita Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato, AGCM) has cleared the acquisition of the mobile tower network of WINDTRE by Spanish firm Cellnex. The deal was first announced in November as part of a wider tower sale agreement between WINDTRE owner CK Hutchison and Cellnex. AGCM opened an investigation into the transaction in April, but says it can proceed on the condition that Cellnex makes a certain number of sites in smaller municipalities available to fixed-wireless access (FWA) operators and mobile market newcomer Iliad ‘at market conditions’.
