Telemach Slovenia, part of United Group, has launched 5G services in the centre of the capital Ljubljana, as well as the city’s business district. The firm says that its network, which uses 3.5GHz spectrum won at auction in April this year, is the first true gigabit 5G system in the country, with rival operator Telekom Slovenije having used its existing spectrum holdings in the 2.6GHz band to introduce 5G connectivity at lower speeds last July. Telemach says it plans to invest EUR100 million (USD121 million) in its 4G and 5G mobile networks in the coming years. The launch comes just days after Slovenian telecoms regulator AKOS released spectrum in the 700MHz, 1500MHz, 3.5GHz and 26GHz bands which was auctioned earlier this year.
Separately, parent company United Group has announced that its Telemach operations in Slovenia and Croatia are being combined into a single business unit to improve operational efficiency.
