Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), has announced plans to invest EUR500 million (USD608 million) in the expansion of fibre-optic and 5G networks in the Bavarian capital Munich by 2030. The firm says it has signed a cooperation agreement to use the existing fibre networks of M-net and its utility parent company Stadtwerke Munchen (SWM), which provide gigabit speeds to more than 600,000 homes (representing around 70% of the city’s residents), and in areas where there is currently no access to fibre-optic infrastructure Telekom will invest in the rollout of high speed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks. Telekom’s first customers are expected to be connected to the M-net and SWM infrastructure in 2023.
