MTS expands 5G 4.9GHz pilot to St Petersburg

2 Jun 2021

Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has switched on a 5G user pilot network in St Petersburg, encompassing 16 locations in the city where selected subscribers with 4.9GHz-compatible smartphones will be able to experience mobile data speeds ‘up to 1.5Gbps’ with minimal latency, without limits on usage volumes. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that MTS opened its first 5G 4.9GHz user pilot network in 14 locations in Moscow in partnership with Huawei in March 2021, issuing SMS invitations to its subscribers with compatible smartphones (supporting the ‘n79’ 4.4GHz-5.0GHz band). MTS is using the pilots to evaluate network performance and solve technical problems. It indicated that the 4.9GHz pilot would be expanded to Yekaterinburg later this year.
