Brazilian mobile market leader Telefonica Brasil (Vivo) has reportedly teamed up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to ‘test and validate’ a 5G Standalone (SA) Cloud Native Core solution. According to TeleTime, the trial also incorporated technology from the likes of Nokia, Oracle and Mavenir. The test was designed to assess the cloud’s ability to withstand an intense volume of connections. AWS bills itself as the ‘world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform’.
The provision of SA 5G functionality has previously been identified as a priority by Brazil’s the National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel). On 25 February 2021 the watchdog approved certain 5G-related rules relating to network rollouts. 5G auction participants will be obliged to deploy SA 5G networks by 2022, rather than relying on dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology, which enables the parallel operation of 4G and 5G services via one frequency band.
