Estonian fixed and wireless operator Telia Eesti has confirmed plans to close its 3G network by the end of 2023. The firm says that only around 1% of its mobile internet usage is via its 3G network, while less than a third of voice traffic is over the 3G system. Chief Technology Officer Andre Visse commented: ‘We can see from the preferences of our customers that less and less phones that only support 3G are used, which in turn constantly reduces voice and data traffic on our 3G network.’ Spectrum freed up by the closure of the 3G network will be used to support 4G and 5G services.
