Telefonica Deutschland has announced that its 5G network is now available in around 60 cities, including Augsburg and Ingolstadt (in Bavaria), Aachen, Gelsenkirchen and Schwerte (North Rhine-Westphalia), and Sindelfingen, Affalterbach and Marbach am Neckar (Baden-Wurttemberg). Approximately 1,300 antennas are operating in the 3.5GHz band. By the end of the year, services will reach 30% of the population thanks to the rollout of 5G in the 700MHz and 1800MHz bands, with nationwide coverage expected by 2025. The firm has also launched its new 5G Standalone (5G SA) core network and said it plans to provide O2 customers with commercial offers as soon as the technology ‘brings real benefits to the mass market’. By summer 2021, the focus will be on implementing the new 5G core network nationwide in all of the company’s own data centres.
