SIM registration programme to begin in late June

21 May 2021

Ghana’s Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has confirmed that a SIM re-registration programme using the national ID card known as Ghana Card will begin in late June and run until the end of December, following which any unregistered SIMs will be disconnected. Subscribers with a Ghana Card will be able to complete the re-registration process on mobile devices using a dedicated USSD code, while any citizens without the new ID can obtain one for free by visiting any National Identification Authority office in the country from July. Speaking at an event in Accra, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful indicated that unlike previous SIM registration campaigns that enabled criminals to exploit loopholes, the government was ‘committed to doing it and doing it right this time’ to ensure a secure database. The new programme will be accompanied by a comprehensive public information and awareness campaign.
