Regional telecoms operator M-net is expanding its ongoing Munich fibre-optic network rollout programme to include an additional 3,200 buildings. These house a total of 17,000 residential and commercial units which will be equipped with connection speeds of up to 1Gbps by 2023. M-net embarked on the city-wide fibre-optic expansion programme in 2010 in partnership with Stadtwerke Munchen (SWM). The original aim was to increase FTTx network coverage to 620,000 homes and businesses in Munich by mid-2021, representing around 70% of households and 81,000 businesses in the city, but this was subsequently increased to 630,000 residential and commercial units by the end of the year and the newly announced expansion areas mean that M-net is now planning to reach 650,000 homes and businesses by 2023. At present the firm, which is a subsidiary of SWM, is able to connect 600,000 premises in the Bavarian capital.
