Orange Slovakia switches on 5G in two cities

13 May 2021

Orange Slovensko has launched 5G networks in areas of Bratislava and Banska Bystrica. The cellco is using 3.5GHz spectrum and Massive MIMO equipment to provide peak theoretical download rates of up to 1.3Gbps, although real-world data rates will be well below this, with a peak of around 600Mbps. Orange says it has spent EUR144 million (USD174 million) over the past three years modernising its networks in preparation for the introduction of 5G. Rival operator Slovak Telekom (ST) launched 5G services in Bratislava in December using repurposed 2100MHz frequencies alongside 4G technology.
