State-owned full-service provider Swisscom has selected Nokia to modernise its optical transport network (OTN). Under the terms of the agreement Nokia will act as the sole supplier to build an end-to-end nationwide WDM/OTN that will transport all of Swisscom’s fixed and mobile traffic and support client services from 1G to 400G. According to the Finnish vendor, its solution will enable Swisscom to reduce operating expenses and optimise capital expenditure through simplified and streamlined end-to-end service operations, which make more efficient use of network resources through automation.
Swisscom CTO Christoph Aeschlimann said of the deal: ‘Swisscom has set out its network expansion strategy until the end of 2025, which is to equip the network for the new decade. This strategic partnership with Nokia highlights Swisscom’s commitment to delivering a high capacity, fully automated nationwide optical backbone for Switzerland. This next-generation transport network can quickly adapt to changes and provide superior services and connectivity experiences to our customers.’
