Swisscom enlists Ericsson to support 5G SA upgrade

4 May 2021

Swisscom has confirmed that it has strengthened its vendor partnership with Ericsson, with a contract extension that focuses on the telco’s continued deployment of 5G technology. The two companies first entered into a strategic partnership in 2015, expanding it to include 5G access in 2017. The press release notes that ‘the partnership extension is a major step towards transitioning Swisscom’s live 5G network to 5G Standalone (SA) mode’.

Swisscom switched on what it claimed was the first commercial 5G network in Europe in April 2019, going on to extend coverage to 96% of the Swiss population. In December 2020 the two companies made the first voice and data calls over a commercial 5G SA network in Bern. These calls were made using Ericsson 5G Radio Dot System, 5G Core, IMS and commercial devices.
