Globe Telecom of the Philippines announced yesterday (21 April) that it is implementing mobile number portability (MNP) within its networks ahead of the government-mandated deadline of 30 September 2021. The Ayala-led firm disclosed that its internal MNP provisions now cover all post-paid to pre-paid, pre-paid to post-paid, and pre-paid to pre-paid customer requests within its ‘Globe’ and ‘TM’ brands, with chief commercial officer Issa Guevarra-Cabreira noting: ‘Enabling our customers with the freedom to move across subscription types while allowing them to retain their original mobile number creates a new level of experience’.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the Philippines’ government had intended on introducing MNP in the first quarter of this year under the remit of the Republic Act 11202 – also known as the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Act – signed in February 2019, with implementing rules and regulations (IRR) taking effect from 2 July 2019. Whilst Globe Telecom and PLDT’s Smart Communications have now started to allow MNP within their respective networks, they are yet to allow it for anyone wishing to switch network provider.
