Zimbabwean utility firm Zonful Energy is looking to improve connectivity in rural areas with the aid of a grant from the GSM Association (GSMA) via its Innovation Fund for Mobile Internet Adoption and Digital Inclusion. Zonful, whose main business is the provision of modular solar power systems for off-grid locations, wants to resell smartphones and pre-paid data packages supplied by Zimbabwe’s largest cellco by subscribers, Econet Wireless. William Ponela, CEO of Zonful Energy, said: ‘With this project we will help our remote rural customers finance the purchase of their smartphones in an affordable way.’ The GSMA estimates that 43.5% of Zimbabweans have no access to the internet.
