Nigeria lifts suspension on the sale and activation of new SIMs

19 Apr 2021

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy has announced that the government has lifted the restriction on the activation and registration of new SIM cards. New customer registrations must be in line with the revised National Digital Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration, which states that mobile phone users must provide their National Identity Number (NIN) to their service provider. The issuance of new SIM cards by mobile operators had been banned since December, when the NIN registration of existing mobile subscribers was launched, but with the new revised policy coming into force today (19 April 2021), service providers are permitted to resume the sale and activation of new SIMs, as long as the verification process and the guidelines are fully adhered to.
