Openreach, the network unit of BT Group, has announced it plans to invest a further GBP100 million (USD137 million) over the course of the next year in Northern Ireland. According to ISPreview the additional capital investment will be used to expand the availability of its gigabit-capable fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network to another 100,000 premises, while also allowing Openreach to maintain its existing infrastructure. The new build plans reportedly include homes and businesses in rural towns and villages across Northern Ireland, from Castledawson in County Londonderry to Aughnacloy in County Tyrone.

With Openreach said to currently be rolling out FTTP across Northern Ireland at a rate of more than 3,500 premises per week, meanwhile, the announcement regarding additional funding for the rollout also saw the company confirm its fibre infrastructure now covers over 65% of premises (or 530,000) in the region, including 75% of homes and businesses in Belfast.
