Airtel upgrades network sites in preparation for 5G rollout

8 Apr 2021

Airtel Kenya has upgraded around 600 mobile sites with 5G technology as it aims to launch commercial services in the next couple of years. Business Daily cites the company’s Managing Director Prasanta Das Sarma as saying that the upgraded sites are located in Nairobi, Mombasa and Malindi. ‘These 600 sites are now 5G-ready. We don’t have to make any further modifications to the network. We will just get the spectrum and decide when to switch on,’ he said, adding that this would likely take place in the next two years, once the cost of 5G-compatible handsets and devices decreases.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, last month market leader Safaricom announced the launch of 5G trials for both individual and enterprise customers in Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii and Kakamega. As part of the trials, the company plans to expand the number of 5G sites to more than 150 across nine towns over the next twelve months. Nokia and Huawei have been chosen as the two technology partners to implement the rollout of Safaricom’s 5G network.
