Smart extends 5G reach to over 2,000 sites nationwide

25 Mar 2021

Smart Communications, the wireless division of PLDT Inc., has revealed that it has now activated more than 2,000 5G sites across the Philippines. In a brief statement yesterday (24 March), the company confirmed that its aggressive rollout programme is being carried out alongside efforts ‘to widen its array of Smart 5G-certified devices to make 5G easier to access’.

Having launched 5G commercially in Metro Manila (officially known as the National Capital Region [NCR]) and nearby provinces such as Cavite, Laguna and Rizal in July 2020, in December Smart revealed its intention to upgrade ‘40% of its sites’ to 5G technology by end-2021 – i.e. no fewer than 4,000 base transceiver stations (BTS) – while last month it confirmed that its in-deployment fifth-generation network extended to 17 cities and municipalities in the NCR as well as to the cities of Angeles and Mabalacat in Pampanga, Bacoor in Cavite, and Binan and Santa Rosa in Laguna.
