RCS&RDS loses court appeal over 3.7GHz licence extension

19 Mar 2021

RCS&RDS has lost a case in the Bucharest Court of Appeal concerning the conditions of its 3700MHz licence granted in 2015, reports Profit.ro. The company, which operates mobile services under the name DIGI Mobil, had challenged an amendment to its licence conditions brought by the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) on 23 April 2020, which removed any possibility of extending the validity of the licence beyond 2025. In a tender held in October 2015, RCS&RDS paid EUR1.88 million (USD2.24 million) for 10×5MHz blocks of unpaired frequencies in the 3700MHz band, valid for a period of nine years starting from 1 January 2016. The company, which currently uses the frequencies for 5G mobile services, has the right to appeal the ruling.
