Openreach contracts VIAVI to ensure network quality in FTTP rollout

3 Mar 2021

VIAVI Solutions has announced that BT Group’s network arm Openreach is to use the VIAVI Optical Network Monitoring System (ONMSi) to accelerate its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) deployment and ‘enhance the quality of its build and experience for customers across the UK’. In a press release regarding the development, VIAVI said that Openreach had selected ONMSi for the platform’s ability to address networks remotely – from validating new construction, to performing preactivation checks, to monitoring ongoing service – reducing the need for costly engineering visits.

Commenting, Peter Bell, Director, Network Technology at Openreach, said: ‘We want to maintain our position as the UK’s leading Full Fibre network by working with world class partners, and VIAVI’s innovations in remote fibre testing will help us monitor and accelerate our network build whilst making sure we continue to deliver great experience for customers.’

Openreach has set a target to deliver 20 million homes passed with FTPP technology by the mid-to-late 2020s, assuming it has ‘the right investment conditions’, and it currently claims to be on track to reach 4.5 million premises passed by 31 March 2021.
