The International Finance Corporation (IFC) – part of the World Bank Group – will provide a USD3 million loan to Kyrgyz wholesale/corporate broadband network operator ElCat, to increase fibre coverage in underserved areas, supporting development of mobile and fixed broadband connectivity. An announcement from the IFC noted that the loan was its first investment in the landlocked country’s telecoms sector, while ElCat’s CEO Ulan Tolubaev said: ‘With IFC’s funding, we plan to expand our network, improve affordability and increase access to high speed internet connectivity for households, businesses and public sites – schools, healthcare centres and government offices – including locations in remote parts of the country.’
