The rumoured merger between Grupo MASMOVIL and Vodafone Spain is also expected to incorporate Vodafone Portugal, El Confidencial reports, citing ‘financial sources’. As per the article, MASMOVIL has enlisted Goldman Sachs to supervise the process, as it seeks to create an enlarged entity capable of dominating the Iberian Peninsula. The shareholder split remains an obstacle, however; Vodafone wants a 60:40 split in its favour, while MASMOVIL is pushing for a 50:50 ownership ratio.
TeleGeography notes that MASMOVIL remains something of an unknown quantity in Portugal, having only acquired local cableco Nowo in November 2019. The telco is an active participant in the country’s ongoing spectrum auction, however, and its status as a new bidder has antagonised Portugal’s incumbent mobile operators – Vodafone included.
