DOCOMO jumps on Open RAN bandwagon

Japan’s NTT DOCOMO has announced that, along with an international group of other leading firms such as NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Intel, Fujitsu and Dell, it aims co-create a verified 5G Open RAN ecosystem for other operators. In a press release dated 3 February the operator confirmed that it will collaborate with up to a dozen companies to start discussions on the introduction of Open RAN for overseas carriers and specifically, will aim to ‘package, provide, install, operate, and maintain the optimal radio access network in response to the requests of communications carriers considering the introduction of Open RAN. Under the plans, DOCOMO envisions the development of a new vRAN base station – to be launched in 2022 – with another ecosystem partner, Mavenir.
