Nigeria extends NIN registration deadline for mobile users

3 Feb 2021

The Nigerian government has announced it has extended the deadline for the country’s mobile phone users to register a valid National Identification Number (NIN) with their service provider. The date has now been postponed by a further eight weeks to 6 April 2021, in order to give the population more time to integrate their NINs with their SIM cards. According to Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, a total of 56.18 million NINs have so far been collected by the nation’s mobile operators, up from 47.8 million as of 18 January; Nigeria had around 198 million mobile users at the end of September 2020, notes TeleGeography’s Database. The aim of the NIN and SIM registration exercise is to improve the security in the West African nation.
