Internet blackout ends in Uganda, though social media still blocked

Internet services have been partially restored in Uganda after the government imposed a blackout in the run-up to last week’s presidential election, which was won by the incumbent Yoweri Museveni. According to the BBC, however, users were still unable to connect to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter yesterday (18 January). The ban was ordered on 13 January after Facebook removed accounts linked to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party which had been used to target opponents. Opposition politician Bobi Wine has said that the election was rigged, and claims that he has been under house arrest since the vote.
