Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corporation (MIESCOR), a subsidiary of Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), is reportedly participating in the Philippine government’s common tower programme which seeks to ramp up the deployment of mobile services across the country. MIESCOR is one of the eight companies licensed by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to operate as independent tower companies (ITCs), Power Philippines News reports, with each ITC having secured a five-year certificate of registration.
The other firms are: CEEC Tower, Communication and Renewable Energy Infrastructure, Desarrollos Terrestres, ISOC Edotco Towers, Ison Tower, Transcend Towers Infrastructure (Philippines) and LBS Technologies Asia Pacific.
In August 2020 DICT simplified the processing time for securing permits, resulting in a total of 4,544 tower construction permits being issued between July and November 2020 – a significant improvement from 2019, according to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) which said that the total number of towers stood at 22,405 at that date. Globe Telecom leads with 10,270 towers, followed by PLDT’s Smart Communications with 10,069. Third player DITO Telecommunity, meanwhile, has 2,066.
DICT aims to increase the number of towers to 50,000 nationwide in the next five to ten years.
