For its fiscal first quarter ended 30 November 2020, Canadian quadruple-play operator Shaw Communications posted a 0.9% year-on-year drop in total revenues to CAD1.370 billion (USD1.08 billion), while adjusted EBITDA improved 3.2% to CAD607 million and net income rose 0.6% to CAD163 million.
Quarterly ‘Wireline’ revenue decreased 1.0% y-o-y to CAD1.056 billion with the Consumer portion dropping 1.4% to CAD911 million while Business Wireline revenue increased 1.4% to CAD145 million. Total fixed broadband internet connections saw a 14,000 net drop in the three-month period to 2.068 million.
Wireless service revenue for the three months increased 9.7% y-o-y to CAD215 million, including Shaw’s Freedom Mobile and Shaw Mobile brands, while ARPU decreased 1.3% to CAD38.25, reflecting take-up of bundled Shaw Mobile customers. Wireless equipment revenue decreased 16.4% to CAD102 million as the vast majority of new Shaw Mobile customers chose to bring their own device. The group added 101,000 net new wireless customers in the quarter including 87,300 post-paid and 13,700 pre-paid, with a 31% y-o-y increase in post-paid subscriber additions reflecting strong demand for Shaw Mobile from existing Shaw Internet customers. Total wireless users stood at 1.92 million at the end of the period.
