DoT sets date for spectrum auction

7 Jan 2021

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has published its Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) for the upcoming spectrum auction, set to take place from 1 March 2021. The auction comprises spectrum in the 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz and 2500MHz bands, with concessions valid for 20 years. Operators will have the option to pay a portion of the cost upfront – 50% for frequencies in the 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz and 2500MHz ranges and 25% for the sub-1GHz bands – with the rest to be paid via 16 annual instalments. Nevertheless, bidding is expected to be comparatively limited due to the high reserve prices and the financial difficulties facing the industry. Prospective participants have until 5 February to submit applications to take part in the auction.
