Trio of Egyptian cellcos to get first batch of 2600MHz spectrum within next three months

6 Jan 2021

Three Egyptian mobile network operators (MNOs) that were confirmed to have secured new spectrum in the 2600MHz band in November 2020 will receive a first portion of the frequencies within three months. According to Daily News Egypt, which cites a ‘government official in the telecommunications sector’, Etisalat Misr, Telecom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt will receive half of the spectrum initially, with the remainder expected to be made available within a year.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Vodafone Egypt was confirmed to have been awarded a 40MHz block of 2600MHz TTD spectrum by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) in early November 2020. Telecom Egypt confirmed just a day later that the regulator had accepted and approved its financial and technical offer for additional spectrum, revealing it would receive a 20MHz block of spectrum in the 2600MHz band. Rounding out those MNOs to secure new frequencies, also in November Etisalat Misr outbid Orange Egypt in the second stage of the NTRA’s spectrum award process, to claim a 2600MHz TDD mobile broadband spectrum licence with 20MHz bandwidth.

Subsequently, at the end of December 2020 Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, was reported to have overseen the signing of the agreements relating to the new 2600MHz allocations between the NTRA and all three MNOs.
