Vodafone opens up German cable network to Telefonica

16 Dec 2020

Vodafone Germany has announced it has opened its fibre-optic cable network to Telefonica Deutschland, after months of joint preparatory work. Technicians at numerous locations have connected the networks and implemented IT solutions, enabling Telefonica to offer its customers nationwide speeds of up to 250Mbps via the Vodafone cable network.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in May last year Vodafone announced it had signed a cable wholesale agreement with Telefonica Deutschland, in order to help secure EC approval for its EUR19.0 billion (USD23.1 billion) acquisition of Liberty Global’s assets in Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. The deal allows Telefonica Deutschland to market broadband services to consumers over the combined Vodafone and Unitymedia cable network in Germany, which covers around 24 million households.
