Chinese operators have deployed a total of 718,000 5G base stations to date, Global Times reports, citing Vice Director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Liu Liehong. According to the official, the sites are mostly concentrated in large and medium-sized cities across the country. On the 4G front, meanwhile, infrastructure has now been deployed to the nation’s remote and outlying regions, with the improved connectivity in those areas helping to control the COVID-19 pandemic. The senior official also noted that mobile number portability (MNP) services are operating ‘smoothly’, enabling users to keep their existing phone number when they switch provider. MNP was introduced nationwide in November 2019, and 17 million customers have used the function since its launch.
