Slovak Telekom (ST) has launched the country’s first commercial 5G service in eight districts of Bratislava. The network is using 15MHz of frequencies in the 2100MHz band, in combination with LTE spectrum. The firm says that users can expect realistic download speeds of between 300Mbps and 600Mbps, and upload rates of 60Mbps-80Mbps. It currently offers twelve handsets which support the new 5G network. Meanwhile, ST also announced a project to build the first 5G campus network in Slovakia for logistics firm CEIT in Zilina.
Rival operators O2 and 4ka have previously launched small-scale pilot 5G networks in Bratislava and Banska Bystrica, respectively, while Orange has pledged to launch commercial services in the capital in April 2021. ST, Orange and O2 recently won 5G-capable 700MHz spectrum in a government auction.
