MTS, Ericsson and Qualcomm launch 5G spectrum sharing outdoor pilot zone

11 Dec 2020

Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has partnered Ericsson and Qualcomm to launch an outdoor pilot 5G network zone in Ufa utilising its existing commercial 4G LTE network, based on Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology which dynamically reallocates frequency resources between LTE and 5G NR networks. DSS has been deployed at several MTS base stations in the 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands using the Ericsson Spectrum Sharing solution, tested using 5G smartphones OPPO Reno 4 Pro and Nokia 8.3 5G (with Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G Mobile Platform and Snapdragon X52 5G Modem-RF System). These smartphones will soon be available for sale in MTS stores, whilst DSS will make it possible to quickly and cheaply deploy wide 5G coverage on existing LTE infrastructure once permission is given by the Russian authorities.
