The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced it has suspended the registration of new SIM cards by mobile network operators (MNOs) while it embarks on a new audit of the Subscriber Registration Database. The objective of the audit exercise is to verify and ensure compliance by MNOs with the set quality standards and requirements of SIM registration guidelines as issued by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the NCC. As such, MNOs have been directed to immediately suspend the sale, registration and activation of new SIM cards until the audit exercise is concluded. However, where it is absolutely necessary, exemption may be granted in writing by the NCC following approval from the government. Non-compliance with the NCC’s directive could lead to sanctions, including the withdrawal of an operator’s licence.
