Telekom accelerates fibre, 5G rollout

9 Dec 2020

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile business of Deutsche Telekom (DT), has announced plans to significantly accelerate the rollout of fibre-optic broadband and 5G mobile services in Germany. This year, the firm enabled an additional 600,000 homes to access its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network, compared to 270,000 in 2019, bringing total FTTH coverage to two million households via a network stretching 575,000km. Going forward, Telekom aims to equip an additional two million homes with direct fibre connections annually. Furthermore, by 2023 around 3,000 business parks are also expected to be connected to the fibre-optic network. In terms of its 5G network, Telekom now covers two thirds of Germans via a network of 45,000 antennas and this will rise to 80% within a year and 99% by 2025.
