Nice work: SFR claims first French 5G launch

23 Nov 2020

Altice France (SFR) announced the commercial launch of its 5G mobile network services in the southeast city of Nice on 20 November, with coverage initially spanning over 50% of the city’s population, and new 5G packages available to consumers and businesses on a range of compatible devices. SFR has lined up Montpellier, Bordeaux, Nantes, Marseille and Paris Ile-de-France as the next cities to receive live 5G coverage in the short term.

Following the recent completion of France’s 3500MHz 5G spectrum allocation process, the new mobile frequencies became valid on 18 November 2020, with SFR the first to declare commercial 5G service availability, whilst rival Bouygues Telecom announced it would switch on its 5G network on 1 December 2020, with market leader Orange also expected to confirm a commercial 5G launch soon. Both Orange and Bouygues have been marketing 5G-ready mobile packages in the run-up to launch.
