Telecoms excise duty cut to 8% in 2021 finance law

20 Nov 2020

The government of Madagascar has reduced the excise duty levied on telecommunications from 10% to 8% in the 2021 Finance Law, reports Agence Ecofin. According to Ranesa Firiana Rakotonjanahary, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Development (MPTDN), the decision followed a study conducted by the ministry which showed that a decline in the excise duty will benefit consumers at all levels. The government will closely monitor telcos to ensure the measure, which reverses the rate hike to 10% introduced in the 2020 Finance Law, results in lower prices for customers.
