Vietnam’s VNPT-Vinaphone has announced it has been awarded a licence by Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) allowing it to launch trial 5G networks on a commercial basis. The state-owned operator is permitted to pilot 5G with subscribers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City using spectrum in the 2600MHz and 3700MHz-3800MHz frequency bands and up to 50 base transceiver stations (BTS) in each city. The tests are expected to begin in early December.
The move follows the award of similar pilot 5G trial licences to Viettel and MobiFone at the end of last month. The tests with end users are aimed at helping the companies evaluate the technology and the market before launching commercial operations. All three operators were awarded non-commercial one-year 5G trial licences by the MIC in early 2019.
