Ukraine’s largest cellco by subscribers Kyivstar and its technology partner Huawei have tested 800Mbps-plus mobile data transfer speeds using Carrier Aggregation (CA) of its commercial 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz 4G LTE frequency bands. Vasily Pantov, director of planning and quality management at Kyivstar, said: ‘The results of new tests once again confirm that the potential for 4G development in Ukraine is very large. Therefore, in my opinion, in the next few years the telecom industry should focus on this radio technology.’ Kyivstar’s LTE network currently covers more than 15,000 settlements and 85% of the population, with rapid recent expansion using LTE-900 technology since refarming GSM spectrum in July this year. Kyivstar also highlighted the ‘introduction of technologies related to LTE-Advanced Pro – CA, 4×4 MIMO, Massive MIMO, 256QAM, small cells, etc. via which ‘subscribers get not only high speed, but also a reliable connection and better network capacity.’
Kyivstar also reported that in Q3 2020 its subscribers’ average data traffic usage increased by 50% year-on-year whilst its number of 4G subscribers also increased by around 50%. Revenues rose by 12% driven largely by mobile internet/data service usage, while voice communication per subscriber also rose, by nearly 10%. The average income from a mobile subscriber increased by 14.5%, and from a fixed broadband subscriber by 9.7%.
