TIM begins small cell rollout to support 5G

5 Nov 2020

Telecom Italia (TIM) and tower company INWIT have unveiled plans to begin deploying small cells in major cities to support the development of 5G networks. The rollout will begin with around 100 small cells being installed in Milan and Genoa, and will continue in other main cities and areas of high mobile traffic. The new equipment will help improve signal quality in densely populated urban areas. TIM says it has been experimenting with INWIT on small cells which can be sited in manholes under the road surface in city centres to avoid spoiling historic and cultural locations.
