Haiti launches SIM registration push

5 Nov 2020

Haiti’s National Council of Telecommunications (Conseil National des Telecommunications, or Conatel) has confirmed that it has launched a nationwide SIM card registration scheme. The process is expected to last two months. On 3 November the watchdog’s Director General, Jean-Marie Guillaume, issued the following statement: ‘An identification system is already in place by the operators. The system consists of a telephone application used to take the customer’s picture and record the information contained on his identification card. After the operator has processed the information, the SIM card will be activated within an hour. From now on, SIM cards will no longer be activated in the national territory if they are not identified in the operator database.’
