Telenor Sweden has launched commercial 5G services in central Stockholm, with access available to any Telenor customer with a 5G-capable handset. The firm says it has coverage of at least half of the city centre, adding that it intends to widen its footprint in the capital while also adding connectivity in Malmo and Gothenburg before expanding the rollout to towns with a population of over 50,000. Rival operators Telia, Tele2 and Tre launched 5G services in May and June this year.
Andres Suazo, head of mobile networks at Telenor Sweden, said: ‘We are currently carrying out our largest modernisation and expansion of the network ever. The mobile network will be expanded and densified by more than 60%, which means more than 3,000 base stations, while the majority of existing base stations will be upgraded to the latest 5G technology. When the network expansion is completed in 2023, more than 99% of Sweden’s population will have access to 5G.’
